Professors Without Borders has been entered on the Register of Charities for England and Wales as a charitable company. Its charity number is 1189091.

We were founded in 2016 to send volunteer professors to teach short, skills-focused courses at universities and colleges. Our pilot programme reached 200 students in Sierra Leone in 2016. We have since taught in Uganda, Thailand, India and Senegal.

In 2019, 15 volunteer professors taught more than 400 students in five countries across Africa and Asia. That year we ran our first programme in Francophone Africa, a course in social entrepreneurship for science and maths students in Thiès, Senegal. Sixty per cent of our programmes now target all-women colleges.

Carrier funded the flights for all our professors in 2019, and a new partnership with LSE Ideas at the London School of Economics gave us offices, meeting rooms and conference space.

Earlier this month we postponed all our summer programmes because of the Covid-19 pandemic and cancelled the flights of the professors who were ready to travel to Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Uganda, India, Thailand and Laos. We will keep supporting our partner institutions while travel is not possible.
