Volunteer your expertise on short, intensive higher-education programmes, virtual or in person, with our partner institutions worldwide.
Our volunteer educators are a deliberately mixed group: academics in the traditional sense, and practitioners with deep industry expertise. That mix keeps learning practical, current, and tied to employability.
Not a professor? We welcome volunteers in other capacities too.
Our volunteers have taught in Ghana, Eswatini, Nigeria, Uganda, and India.
How a call works
Recruitment is call-based. Each partner programme gets its own call, with its own dates, subjects, and deadline.
A call opens
We publish the location, dates, subjects, and deadline for one partner programme.
You apply
Submit a CV and a cover letter written in your own words, addressing your commitment to SDG 4 and what you would bring.
Assessment
Shortlisted candidates take a situational judgement test on safeguarding, then interview with our Co-Heads of Programmes.
You teach
You travel, teach, and stay connected with the partner institution long after the programme ends.

We recruited two professors to teach one week each at the University of Global Health Equity in Butaro, Rwanda. The course helps health professions educators integrate AI into medical and public health teaching.

What it is actually like
The experience was transformational. Each individual taught me incredible lessons about life. I will certainly regard this time as one of the best and most memorable experiences in my teaching career.
Volunteering for Professors Without Borders is a remarkable experience that changes the way you approach learning and teaching. African Rural University will always have a special place in my heart.

Before you apply
No. We recruit academics and industry practitioners alike. Most successful applicants hold at least a master's degree in their discipline and have around five years of teaching or coaching experience.
No, teaching is voluntary. Professors Without Borders covers flights, travel insurance, and visa costs; the partner institution covers accommodation, meals, and local transport.
Most programmes run from a few days to two weeks, scheduled around the partner institution's academic calendar.
Yes. Some programmes are delivered virtually and some in person. Each call states which format applies.
A CV and a cover letter. Write the letter yourself: it should address your commitment to SDG 4, quality education, and the skills you would bring. Letters written mainly by AI tools are easy to recognise and count against an application.
A few times a year, whenever a partner programme is confirmed. Subscribing to the newsletter is the most reliable way to hear first.
